DIY tutorial

Here is a step by step tutorial to replace original Grado headband.

Step 1, take off the original headband and earpads

Notice there are 2 tiny holes left on each side of the cup.

Step 2, get the bracket ready

Position the bracket with the cup and match its holes with the one on the cup, then insert the 2 screws.

Do it on both side, and you will get this. Note sometime the hole on the cup may be blocked, then you will need to drill it open to 3mm, and let the screw in.

Step 3, glue the screws to the cup

This is the most tricky step and here is the tips:

  • It it to glue the screw to the cup, not to the bracket. Don’t let the glue stick the screw and the bracket together!
  • The glue can be any instant dry model applicable to plastic and steel. We use Ergo 5910/5920 which are easily accessible from any online store. A/B glue also works very well.
  • A little bit glue shall be enough. You can use a toothpick and take a tiny little bit drop of glue and get it in the gap between the screw and the cup. See the pic blow.
  • Wait >30min until the the glue fully dries

Step 4, do it for both side, put on earpads and done!

As you can see, not difficult at all!

Overall a great replacement headband priced well to expensive custom headbands. There is actual padding on the top of the headband so comfort is better on heavier grados (like my sr325 I’ll be mentioning). It adds a nice premium feeling since everything is made out of metal. Some caveats I’ve noticed: the installation is a nut and bolt system to get it onto the cups, which makes it much harder to get it onto the cups. I could not get the perfect tightness while it was on the cup so I had keep adjusting it before having to flex the yolk over the cup similar to the original grado headband, but if you do it too fast you’ll end of scratching the cup like what I did on my sr325. The headband adjusting mechanism(going up and down) is very stiff it first, and at times creaked, but at your perfect height it will never move and I suspect it would smooth out over time. Another thing is that if you use G-cush pads, your hair could get stuck in between the pad and the metal gimbals which then pulls on your hair when you take it off your head which is annoying. Overall this feels like a durable headband that will last much longer than the plastic ones from grado without spending a fortune on other custom headbands.
